The last thing you probably want to think about right now is your tax return. But if you paid penalties or interest to the IRS during the pandemic, a Friday deadline could be your only chance to get that money refunded.
According to National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins, tens of millions of taxpayers may be entitled to refunds or the removal of penalties and interest assessed by the IRS during the nearly 3½ years in which the pandemic was declared a federal disaster.
The potential windfall is tied to a little-known but significant U.S. Court of Federal Claims decision in November — Kwong v. United States — that centered on how the IRS handles tax filing and payment deadlines when a national disaster is declared.
